L.A. 2014

Fall 2014 Mini Trip #2: Los Angeles.

Sans dog.

I expect this trip to live up to the insanely high standards as the last 2 L.A. cameo trips. Albeit, I was in my 20s and a whole lot more spunkier. And energetic. And immune to jet lag then. But aside from the obvious fact that I can't hang like I used to - No excuses!

SoCal - I'm so 85% ready for ya. Let's do this!

(Packing and planning issues ain't no joke. Recurring problem, really. Probably helped if I hadn't waited, oh, at the very last minute. =X You woulda thunk I had that all figured out after 10+ years and 50+ countries later! Travel fail!)

houston hiatus.

hello, houston.
How do I still have tons of errands and projects to get done in a city I haven't lived in for over a year? Bah. Well, hopefully I get to knock most of them out of the way in the next few days. It be nice to come back to Htown solely to visit friends and family, with the occasional photoshoot on the side! So fear not, y'all. I got this. With my leopard print flats on and hot green tea in hand, I'm ready to tackle these long-overdue, insistent errands with gusto! See y'all in a week!

For weeks various friends have been raving about a new creperie in Houston. Possibly the best in town, they say. Nice. Can't argue with that! I do loves me a good crepe. And with crepes being among my top 30 foodie noms, I had to give it a go. So a group of us moseyed on over this past Sunday for brunch. And yah, this place most def lives up to it's hype!

Between the six of us, our crepe massacre consisted of: Truffled Caprese Crepe, Chicken Carbonara Crepe, a couple of Nordic Crepes, The Feast Crepe, Argentine Dulce de Leche Crepe, espresso, hot coffee, Iced Mayan Chocolate and Spiced Chai Latte. A little bit of sweet, a whole lot of savory, six very happy tummies and a ton of high praise. This may be my new favorite creperie in Houston!

new year's resolution #2: take more daily pix.

new year's resolution #2: more daily pix with my 5dmII.

... with my slr, that is. Which brings me to my next new year's goal:

2 -- Snap more daily pix with my 5dmII.

With the conveniency of the camera phone, who needs to lug around a dslr? Instant gratification, instant post processing, instant upload to anything, anywhere, anytime. Boom. What's not to like about that? I, myself, have pulled in ~10,000 pics these past few years with the help of 10 camera apps. =X Ahem. Yah, that's right, taking conveniency to the next level! Camera phone addict right here! (Long distance high five, fellow Droidographers!) Which means, I only reserve the dslr for photoshoots and special events.

But I would like to improve on the technicalities of photography. And the best way to do that is to bring my baby, my 5dmII, everywhere with me. I have an awesome camera bag masquerading as a purse, so I really have no excuse. In the 2013, blog less phone photos and more slr ones.  I'm gonna do it! I'm gonna do it! I'm gonna do it! (That's me motivating myself. Maaaybe even convincing myself. >.<) Here goes!

new year's resolution #1: monthly goals.

new year's resolution #1: start off with small.

Picture by Jin Chu Ferrer of Contradiction of Sorts.

So it started with an eye irritation from a self-inflicted eye pokage. Just enough damage to walk around with a red swollen eye for a few days. Followed by a mild case of the cold which I'm currently trying to shake off. All in the past week. Fantabulous start to 2013, eh? The only good that came of these minor setbacks (omens?? =/)  was that it gave me the gift of time to contemplate on 2013 expectations. Gotta think optimistically, yah? 'Cause it's way too early for bad juju! Alrighty, here we go!:

1 -- Starting off small with monthly goals.

To shake things up in our 2nd year of marriage (and to keep us on our wedded bliss toes!), V and I thought it would be more realistic to set monthly goals. We all know how quickly those broad wishy-washy yearly resolutions fizzle out and so this was a way to keep us on track. Like I said, starting off small:

Jincent's goals for the month of January:

- Cook a new international dish every week.

- Work out a few times a week.

- Practice Spanish for a minimum of 8-10 hrs a week.

My personal January goal:

- Wake up earlyish. Ideally 8ish. I love all the romantic notions of early day starts and come to realize that I prefer to work out and do all my mini adventures in the morning. Some of my most creative moments are during this time of day! Problem is, I'm totally not a morning person. >.< Oi. I ain't gonna lie. This ain't gonna be easy.

A little underwhelming, I know. Baby steps, mang, baby steps. Next month we are upping the ante and def adding to this list. Resolution #2 tomorrow!

Over the Christmas break, JoJo and I had a mini sister foodie adventure at one of our fave macaron spots in Houston. We love everything about this place. The macarons are delish. The location is awesome. (Next to Anthropologie AND Urban Outfitters AND Sur La Table AND Paper Source AND Flora & Muse's flower shop.) The macarons are delish. The simple urban decor is inspiring. (I LOVE the mix of brick, hardwood, metal + chalkboard.) Did I mention the macarons are delish? Le sigh. They had me at first glance. The deal was sealed at first bite! Every time I visit, my camera eye is in full inspiration mode and my taste buds yearn to nibble on every nomlicious treat. There's something about this place that's really ... deliciously infectious!

JoJo and I ordered half the macaron menu. That's 7-8 flavors that we've happily sampled. Unanimous faves: the espresso and pumpkin. Everything else came in a close second. ;-) Kinda wished I lived on top of this pastry heaven instead of a coffee shop so I could try all their flavors! (Ok, this could be the macaron high talking. I really do love the coffee shop downstairs!) Til next macaron adventure!

holiday instaweek 2012.

instaholiday: good morning, houston!

Crazy busy last week of 2012 (eee!) in Houston! Here we go!:

instaholiday: sweet with sister.

1 -- Started off the week with a couple of Christmas get-togethers, a photoshoot and a spontaneous macaron adventure with the sissy at Sweet in City Centre. I love coming here! Aside from the delicious treats, I love just looking at their pretty urban decor. Def one of me and my sister's fave macaron shoppes in town!

instaholiday: starbucks with hanh.

2 -- Met up with Miss Hanh for a late nite coffee chat at Starbucks in the Galleria. 24hr Starbucks are most awesome!

instaholiday: korean restaurant with liz.

3 -- Ah, then there was the Korean soul food adventure with Liz at Han Mi Jung Korean Diner on Blalock. Tol Sot Bibimbap FTW!

instaholiday: korean restaurant with liz.

3 1/2 -- I couldn't resist. More pix of Liz and I's Korean foodie adventure! This is how much I love (and craved!) Tol Sot Bibimbap!

instaholiday: hmart with liz.

4 -- After the Bibimbap massacre, Liz and I headed to Hmart to do some quick grocery shopping before grabbing a late afternoon coffee jolt at Tous Les Jours. Kimchee for Liz, pomegranates for me.

instaholiday: tous les jours with liz.

4 1/2 -- And here we are at Tous Les Jours. Coffee for Liz, Hot Jasmine Tea for me.

instaholiday: empire cafe with brian + louise.

5 -- The foodie adventures continue! Saturday brunch with one of Jincent's fave jetsettin' (and highly entertaining) couples, Brian + Louise, at Empire Cafe. Highly recommend the Italian Toast with Cafe Au Lait!

instaholiday: petite sweets.

6 -- Oh yes. Another macaron adventure! This time at another local fave, Petite Sweets. They have one of the yummiest pistachio macarons out there!

instaholiday: agora with gkat + liz.

7 -- We do love our late night coffee chats. Met up with Kat, Gary + Liz at Agora for a midnight snack. Er, more like a meal. We all guzzled down tea and beer and coffee, while scarfing down cookies and truffles and wasabi-coated peas and lumpia.

instaholiday: bbq korean garden.

8 -- Aaand one more last meal before heading back to Austin. More Korean soul food at BBQ Garden Korean! And that there, my friends, is another Tol Sot Bibimbap. I guess it's no secret that it is one of my favorite Korean dishes. I could eat this stuff, like, everyday! =X

Whew!  What a way to close out 2012! Good company, good foodie advenures, good visual eye-candy! Here's to more adventures in the 2013!

Anthonette happens to be one of my very best friends from high school and so I was honored when she asked if I could shoot her family on Christmas Eve. All four siblings, parents, babies and all. And let me tell ya, The Okorodudus' are quite the boisterous crowd! I could not stop giggling the whole time! They reminded me of my Dad's side of the family, when reunited, everybody is talkative and joking and inquisitive and high on life, like, 24/7!  I especially loved how everybody was yelling at each other in their Nigerian names and taking pix with their phones next to me and constantly cracking jokes the whole time. 'Black on black people doesn't look good!' Gah, I love this family! More pics coming soon!

first foodie instaweek of december.

instaweek: first week of december.

1 -- Started off the first week of December with ... traffic. >.< But, whatevs, still nowhere near as bad as Houston's traffic! I'll take it!

instaweek: first week of december.

2 -- One of my fave photog friends, Mr. MelMel, came to town for a weekend visit. Always a crazy fun time catching up on Rainey St. when he's around! Dance battles and food truck mis-adventures and funny gun talk and tons of giggles. Gots a few priceless video footage for evidencia. ;-)

And I finally got to meet one of his older sisters after all these years! He only talks about how awesome and close they all are, like, all the time!

instaweek: first week of december.

3 -- DIY christmas cards in progress.

instaweek: first week of december.

4 -- Another week full of foodie adventures. A little bit of wine + hummus at Opa, a little bit of Sunday brunch (and may I add, one of the bestest brunch spots in Austin!) at Moonshine, a little bit of Korean goodness at Rockin Rice, a little bit of Asian-fusion at East Side King.

instaweek: first week of december.

5 -- Speaking of foodie adventures, we also popped on over to one of my fave gourmet ice cream spots in Austin. Lick on South Lamar. Twice. =X The second time around I tried the Savory Pecan & Bourbon, as well as the Peppermint Bark, and oh em gee this stuff is deeevine! IloveyouLick!

instaweek: first week of december.

6 -- But the ice cream adventures didn't stop there. Oliver was craving HEB's Pumpkin Ice Cream like he was preggers and a zombie apocalypse was going down the next day. Whatever the urgent reason may be, we had to get our hands on it right away. So we traveled to 4 HEBs in one night just to find this sucker. All sold out. Oliver eventually caved and settled for Blue Bell's Spiced Pumpkin Pecan, which turned out to be quite tasty!

instaweek: first week of december.

As ya'll can see, gots another week full of foodie adventures under my belt. Til next instaweek!

instaweek: pre-turkey day adventures.

instaweek: h&m austin finally opens!

1 -- H&M Austin finally opens! Red carpet, music blaring, people clapping ... then we saw the line. 4 blocks long. >.< So came back Monday morning to check out what's left of the grand opening massacre. It's nowhere as impressive as the H&Ms in Cali or NYC or Europe. But it's def one of the bigger ones in Texas. I'll take it!

instaweek: movember.

2 -- Saturday night spent hopping around Rainey Street while inspecting the Movember progress.  More than halfway over. Looking good, V + El!

instaweek: brunch at walton's with oliver + ophelia.
instaweek: brunch at walton's with oliver + ophelia.
instaweek: brunch at walton's with oliver + ophelia.
instaweek: brunch at walton's with oliver + ophelia.

3 -- Sunday brunch at Walton's with Oliver and Ophelia.  Finally had a chance to sink my teeth into the Challah French Toast that I've been eyeing for months. Creme brulee batter, Vermont maple syrup, fresh berries. Not too shabby. Could do without the french toast drowning in syrup, though!

instaweek: austin fan fest 2012.
instaweek: austin fan fest 2012.

4 -- Anyone finds it weird that Formula 1 and Austin are in the same sentence? Yeah, me, too. But hey, it's history in the making and checking out Austin Fan Fest was our weak attempt of being part of it all.  In the meantime, Mario Kart is the closest I'll get to any type of car racing! Vroom vroom!

Aaand that was just the first half of the week! The second half was full of Friendsgivings 1, 2, 3 AND 4, as well as a Thanksgiving gathering with family.  What a way to end November! Good friends/family, good food, good times! Hope ya'll had a fulfilling Turkey Day 2012! No pun intended. ;-)

honey bear + bumblebee baby shower insta-peek.

Getting my DIY on for a baby shower I'm co-hosting with Jan + Kristine this coming Saturday. We are showering our good friends, Annie + George, with all things honey and yellow and awesome. Here's a peek at some of the decor I'm working on. Like those pinwheels on a branch.
Hand-written labels on the honey bear tummies.
 Goldiwho?
 Sippin' on sunshine with style.
DIY honey jars. Without the honey. Those real jars of honey are uber expensivo!
A little bit of tea. A little bit of gatorade. Voila! Looks like real honey! All topped off with fun yellow patterns and tied down with twine.
DIY chevron letter. Giant wooden 'G' and yellow chevron fabric copped on sale from Hobby Lobby. Mod Podge, exacto knife, and 5 minutes. Boom. Done and done.

More honey bear + bumblebee baby showerness coming soon!
